Communication is key

There are so many opportunities for GS1 in healthcare, especially now as we are moving to a sector-wide adoption and implementation of GS1 Standards. Much of our work is focused on facilitating compliance with existing and developing regulatory and customer requirements, and that is where global harmonisation is crucial – we can leverage the global reach of GS1 Standards and the local impact of our network of MOs to engage local user communities to advance global standards.
However, our communication efforts are not without challenges! There is still a too-limited awareness amongst some healthcare stakeholders about GS1, our system of standards and its benefits; there is a true need for promotion and education, for keeping it simple and focused on patient safety and ROI. And with so many different stakeholders – governmental and intergovernmental bodies and regulators, manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, healthcare providers, pharmacy retail, trade associations, solution providers – we must also ensure a neutral and consistent approach.
